We Are All One

Last week I blogged about how “Happiness Is Contagious” and discussed how our attitude affects everyone around us. Taking this a step further, have you ever realized that we are all one? It’s a metaphysical concept comprised of two parts: (1) We all are a part of God, Universal Consciousness, or Source Energy, and therefore we are all connected, and (2) Everything we do affects one another. Wow! That’s some heavy stuff, but let me explain.

The primary construct that “we are all one” is based of the idea that we are all made of the same divine stuff and therefore we are linked to everything around us. There is no separation between you and God—not to mention you and every other living being on this planet. This idea can be found in many different religions—from Buddhism (in which it’s believed we are all interconnected and nothing exists in isolation) to Christianity (“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”).

So if we are all one and interconnected, then logically everything we do affects those around us. Envision a drop of water on a pond. It creates a ripple, and you see that ripple moving across the entire surface—never stopping until it reaches the other side. Our actions work exactly the same way. I came to realize this myself when I had become upset with someone who had treated me poorly, and I thought about retaliation. Instead, I chose to meditate on the situation for clarity, and decided that, by letting it go, I would no longer attract that person’s ill actions. A much better choice for me!

In simple terms, if we are all one, when we hurt someone, we are ultimately only hurting ourselves. Buddha put it quite well: “You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.” From an optimistic perspective, the good side is that any positive loving action attracts the same in return. Some call this karma, or the law of cause and effect. John Lennon wrote about this in the lyrics of a song: “Instant karma’s gonna to get you.” Remember, karma can be good, too, so if we are all one, choose your actions wisely and think through the effects it will have on others.

This week, I choose to lovingly think through my actions and consider the effects they will have. I will impact those around me positively and with good intentions. By doing this, I will positively impact myself. I invite you to do the same and, remember, we will all benefit because we are all one! XO Shari
