A year back, I attended a rodeo in Davie, Florida, which reminded me of a funny, yet timeless, saying: Take the bull by the horns. Conjuring up images of the old West in my mind, I asked myself, “What does this saying really mean to us today?” To take the bull by the horns is to do something difficult in a determined and confident way. It’s about confronting an issue head-on and taking action.
We often need to be reminded to take the bull by the horns, because it isn’t necessarily in our nature to be pro-active. Why would we choose to procrastinate and avoid tackling something difficult or challenging? It’s because we often choose the path of least resistance—or the path requiring the least amount of effort. To do something different or challenging takes courage and strength.
I recall several years ago how much I wanted to start my own consulting business. My goal was to work from home. I had grown tired of driving to the office every day, and putting on a suit was less than desirable, too. I knew I had the work ethic to stay focused in a home office, but I feared taking the risk to actually pull the plug on my corporate job. I finally gathered up my courage and took the plunge, planning out all the necessary steps to make it happen. I grabbed the bull by the horns, and I can now proudly say I have great clients—and I wear shorts to my home office every day!
Remember in my earlier posts when I talked about the steps we must take to achieve our goals in life? I said we must clearly set our intentions on what we desire to accomplish or attract. Then I discussed carefully writing and speaking positive words for clarity. But we also need to take action to achieve our goals. In other words, we need to take the bull by the horns and physically make it happen. Many reasons can hold us back from doing this: fear of failure, lacking the tools we need to do something different, not fully planning out the steps we should take, and, lastly, not setting aside enough time to achieve our goals.
This week, I challenge you to take the bull by the horns! Get outside of your comfort zone and approach a difficult situation confidently and in a determined manner. It’s up to you to take this life-changing step on your journey . . . and, yes, you can achieve your dreams by confronting your fears and challenges, and taking action.
Have a super day, y’all! XO Shari
